Might Guy is a Konoha Jnin who sports thick eyebrows, an exceedingly unconventional personality and a very shiny haircut. He is the self-proclaimed rival of Hatake Kakashi and the sensei of a ninja team consisting of Rock Lee, Hyuuga Neji and Tenten. Gai is a Konoha Village jounin and the sensei of the team whose members are Rock Lee, Tenten, and Hyuuga Neji. Like Lee, he is a specialist in hand-to-hand combat or taijutsu, but unlike Lee, he can use ninjutsu or genjutsu.

He and Kakashi are known as eternal rivals, gai is in the lead with 50 wins to 49 losses. Later it becomes known that this is just the score of a rock-paper-scissors game they played when they were kids. He is also a fantastic teacher Maito Gaisince he really cares about his students and their feelings, especially Lee. Although he really cares about his students, he is very strict about his rules and those who break them will receive a punishment.

Gai and Lee are very close. Lee is Gai's favorite student because of his nindo, (way of the ninja), and because Lee looks like him in his younger days. Gai is also proud that Lee has mastered the renge, secondary renge, and the ura renge at such a young age. Gai especially appreciates Lee because he has the same eyebrows and the same nindo. He sees his childhood self in Lee.

Maito GaiHe seems to be developing a rivalry with Akatsuki member Hoshigaki Kisame; the two first faced off outside Konoha when Guy connected with Konoha Gourikki Senpuu on Kisame and saved Kakashi, Asuma, and Kurenai. Later, in Naruto II, a Kisame-controlled body substitute fought against Guy and his team; almost overwhelmed by Kisame's strength, Guy opened the Sixth Gate and performed Asakujaku, defeating Kisame and revealing the fact that their attacker was not acutally Kisame but a body double. When Zetsu informed his members of Akatsuki that Guy's team was approaching, Kisame has requested that he be the one to take care of them, as he wanted to repay Guy for "the kick he gave me earlier". However, when they faced off, Guy could not seem to recall who Kisame was, which agitated Kisame greatly.

In Part II, Guy's team follows Kakashi's team as they head off to rescue Gaara. To enter the hideout, Team Guy fights clones of themselves to break the seals closing off the area. During this, Guy and Lee put on their forehead protectors and use walkie-talkies to communicate at a distance. Guy seems to be developing a rivalry with Kisame; the two first faced off outside Konoha when Guy kicked Kisame and saved Kakashi, Asuma, and Kurenai. When Zetsu informed the other members of Akatsuki that Guy's team was approaching, Kisame has requested that he be the one to take care of them, as he wanted to repay Guy for "the kick he gave [him] earlier." However, when they faced off, Guy could not seem to recall who Kisame was, which agitated Kisame greatly. In Part II, a Kisame-controlled body substitute fought against Guy and his team; almost overwhelmed by Kisame's strength, Guy opened the sixth chakra gate and uses Morning Peacock, defeating Kisame and revealing the fact that their attacker was not actually Kisame but a body double. In the end, Guy carries an exhausted Kakashi to Konoha on his back. Their students stare and Sakura comments on how disturbing the scene is. Guy doesn't seem to notice, and challenges the others to keep up as he runs with Kakashi still on his back, further disturbing them. Lee takes it as training and offers to carry Neji, who flatly refuses the offer.
